The Power Of Empathy: Building Connections In The Digital World

It has been demonstrated in the literature that racial bias and stereotypes can alter our empathic reactions (Avenanti et al., 2010). Empathy in Meetheage VR experiences using avatars can decrease if the avatar represents someone of another race or ethnicity than the user, e.g., “white” people are less likely to help black avatars (Maister et al., 2015). Research that compared men and women’s emotional understanding of empathy has shown significant results in which women do substantially better than men (Schieman and Van Gundy, 2000).

This second dimension of touch, named affective touch, is mediated by a specialized system of slow-conducting, unmyelinated peripheral afferents (C-tactile afferents) that selectively respond to gentle and caress-like touch (Olausson et al., 2008; Löken et al., 2009). More specifically, C-tactile afferents are activated by dynamic tactile stimuli delivered at slow velocity (1–10 cm/s), low force (0.3–2.5 mN) and neutral (skin-like) temperature (Vallbo et al., 1999; Ackerley et al., 2014). Notably, interpersonal affective touch has been shown to critically contribute to communicative behavior and social cognition processing (Olausson et al., 2010).

Discover 50 signs of mental illness that can help you identify when someone may need support. During video conferences or virtual meetings, demonstrate active listening by nodding along (when appropriate), maintaining eye contact through the camera, and providing affirmations as others share their thoughts. In professional settings where collaboration tools (like Slack or Microsoft Teams) are utilized, make conscious efforts to recognize teammates’ contributions by explicitly acknowledging their ideas and feelings during discussions. As we navigate the difficulties of online communication, the importance of recognising the humanity behind the screen cannot be overstated. Cultivating kindness and empathy online doesn’t just benefit others but also positively affects ourselves. Whenever possible, offer encouragement or support to others, whether sharing good news, asking for advice, or going through a tough time.

In longitudinal studies, the novelty of the technology effect can be controlled and determine the real affordances of VR and AR to develop empathy. Additionally, for upcoming research on virtual tools, empathy, and prosocial moral reasoning, these studies can be conducted with larger sample sizes and implemented in other countries to determine the effect of cultural differences on empathy. It is also emphasized the importance of research that integrates VR embodiment with clinical assessments and patient experiences, as stated by Aya Briñez et al. 30. Embodiment is relevant for perspective-taking because the participant can take the body of another person and have a better experience that might increase empathy. Furthermore, future research is needed to explore the use of virtual reality for disability advocacy.

The city of Chicago’s new branding promises to honor its past, point towards the future, and be inclusive of all its citizens. Just because you’re a digital-first DTC brand doesn’t mean you can’t and shouldn’t market on the tube.

digital empathy in virtual communities

NFTs and NFC can create a seamless symphony, turning every consumer touchpoint into a personal chapter in their story with a brand. While usefulness and economic value are default drivers for brands, don’t overlook the social, personal, and rewarding drivers. Join us at SXSW 2025 for a dynamic event designed to foster collaboration between health influencers, brands, media, and marketers.

In an age where screens often mediate our relationships, digital communities have become a cornerstone of modern social life. Whether you’re logging in to bet on all matches of Dota 2 or joining a group chat on Discord, people are gathering online not just to share interests, but to forge emotional bonds, seek support, and engage in meaningful conversations. What was once considered a secondary or artificial form of interaction is now a primary space for human connection. The moral, ethical and mediated effects implied in an immersive media experience of being in proximity to (or occupying) other people’s lives is something that previous medium such as cinema could not provide in the same way. Therefore, we have to explore the overall effects, which are still unknown, of this medium more responsibly.

As a result, people may be less inclined to offer supportive comments, particularly in communities focused on mental health, where the need for support may be greater. Our research uses a cross-community comparative method, expanding on previous work that primarily focused on specific support communities. We examine both mental health and control groups on Reddit, aiming to explore the understudied impact of Covid-19 on online support dynamics. Specifically, we analyze how the pandemic has influenced post characteristics (such as length, theme, and sentiment) and the corresponding support levels, employing sentiment analysis over the pandemic period.

Debates are based on how empathy is produced, as a process or as an outcome, whether empathy is a cognitive state or an emotional state (Davis et al., 1994; Duan and Hill, 1996), whether we have the personal disposition to experience empathy, or whether it is a faculty that can be acquired. Addressing these challenges will be critical for digital mental health platforms’ continued success and efficacy. With technological advancements, there lies immense potential for refining and enhancing the online therapeutic experience. By providing a platform for shared experiences, improving empathy, and expert guidance, online therapy holds the potential to foster an environment where wisdom can prosper.

Together, these traits transform a collection of users into something more — a support network, a collective conscience, and a safe haven in an often impersonal online world. A YouTube creator sharing their journey with grief may receive thousands of comments from strangers who offer words of comfort or share similar losses. A Twitter thread about surviving a mental health crisis can spark replies from people thanking the author for helping them feel less alone. A Twitch streamer might cry on camera and be overwhelmed by messages of encouragement from viewers around the world. As presented here, VR computer generated experiences can include a wide variety of configurations, from interaction and agency features to embodied and representative characteristics.

Simple gestures like sharing helpful resources, offering words of encouragement, or celebrating others’ achievements create a positive atmosphere. Avoiding distractions and giving full attention to digital conversations improves the quality of interactions. Apps and websites offer mood tracking, guided meditations, and cognitive behavioral therapy exercises. Teletherapy services connect users with licensed therapists remotely, expanding access to professional care. Digital empathy plays a crucial role in professional settings, especially with remote work becoming more prevalent.

Social Connection Through Tactile Experiences

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted people’s mental state and human-computer interactions, observable across multiple dimensions, particularly through the transformation of online community discussions. Social media exposure has intensified during the COVID-19 era, notably affecting mental health. Researchers from China have found a close association between social media exposure and depression during the outbreak 6. In our study, we aim to develop a method to explore the shifts in psychological status and supportive behavior in online communities, comparing the periods before and after the pandemic’s onset by comparing the support index before and after the pandemic.

The real value of digital possessions like NFTs, for instance, lies not in their status as objects but in their role as a medium for connecting people in a shared story that evolves as people engage. Checking yourself before you post or reply keeps conversations healthy, protects relationships, and helps build safe, respectful spaces for everyone online. Add in the spread of misinformation, and online spaces can quickly become more about conflict than connection.

According to Ventura et al. 14, further research should determine if the sense of presence is better than the embodiment or not. The use of other VR headsets or fully immersive VR experiences is still limited so further research on the effect of highly interactive VR experiences (apart from 360° video) might provide more insights into the real effect of VR on empathy. To date, it is unclear which device would be the most effective for presenting VR or AR experiences and this is line with the call for more research stated by Ventura et al. 14. It goes beyond sympathy; it involves putting oneself in another person’s shoes and perceiving their emotions and experiences from their perspective.

Sensing the distress in Mr. Ali’s voice, Malak softly said, “I can see how challenging this must be for you; let’s explore every option to make things more manageable.” Her approach was both reassuring and collaborative, making Mr. Ali feel part of the decision-making process. During the consultation, Malak simplified her explanations about anti-nausea medications and dietary adjustments, ensuring that Mr. Ali could easily grasp the information despite his anxiety and discomfort. When he hesitated over a particular recommendation, Malak patiently discussed alternative treatments, respecting his concerns and adapting the care plan to suit his comfort level.

And when these shared emotions are felt, an “emotional contagion” effect can drive our emotion unconsciously. In a situation where we are sharing concerns for another person’s welfare, while concerned with their feelings, and thus being sympathetic, we cannot be experiencing the same emotional states as they are. These ideas of sympathy were also labeled in the literature as “empathetic concern” (de Waal, 2008). Since then, empathy has been studied from different perspectives ranging from psychology and neurology to anthropology.
